Why does there seem to be so much variation in the caliper of white top liners on the market?

Linerboard caliper will vary due to each manufacturer’s fiber sources, paper machine equipment capabilities, and quality specifications such as smoothness. The use of recycled fibers tends to produce liners that are thinner or denser than liners made with virgin fibers.  Paper machines equipped with presses designed to develop compression strength will also tend to make thinner or denser linerboard.   Lastly, paper machines that are configured to make the paper very smooth will use calenders (passes the paper between two rolls under pressure) and create a sheet that is thinner. Linerboard is primarily manufactured to basis weight and strength targets and not caliper targets.
