FAQs
What can cause fishtailing in the converting process?
The major issues linked with box skew or fishtail at the glue flap joint are:
- Combined board having crushed or leaning flutes. You can ascertain if this is the problem by inspecting the combined board or profiling board caliper against your product tolerances.
- Operator and drive side belts or “spirals” running at different speeds. Use a tachometer to check the belt speeds.
- Combined board being either too wet or over dried. Both extremes adversely affect the folding of the panels crisply at the scores. Again, inspecting the board or running a moisture check will help you decide.
- Blank size at the extreme range of press capabilities. Find out the maximum operating width from the equipment manufacturer to confirm you are within tolerance.
- Folding rails not properly aligned with the scores or excessive wear of the scoring anvils. Visual inspection will reveal this problem.
